Little Lever Girls' Football Team win Bronze at the Greater Manchester School Games

On Wednesday 6th July the Key Stage 3 Girls' Football Team represented Bolton in the Greater Manchester School Games in a 9 a-side tournament. As always, the girls represented the school with pride and behaved impeccably throughout the tournament. Mrs Jackson reports on the day:

When we arrived at the venue, after an amazing opening ceremony at Sport City, we discovered the teams were split into 2 groups with only the top 2 teams going through to the semi finals. Our first match was against Manchester who we knew had an amazing ream. The girls fought hard and played some amazing football and we left the first match with a 1-0 victory after Megan Chambers scored with a header from a corner ball. Our second match was against Stockport and with only 15 minutes per game we knew it would be tough to get a goal in every match. Stockport's defense stayed tight and we came away with a 0-0 draw. Match 3 of the group stages was against Rochdale. Once again the girls displayed an unbelievable amount of talent and managed to score another goal from a set piece with some outstanding long range throw ins from Ebony Langley, leaving the girls with a 2-0 victory! Once in match 4 against Tameside the girls were beginning to become tired and extremely hot as the temperatures continued to rise. The girls managed to keep the ball in their attacking half for the majority of the game but unfortunately one of their players managed to slip past our defense to give them a 1-0 victory.

At the end of the group stages the girls were nervous to find out if we had qualified but as it turned out, the nerves were not necessary as we tied on top points and had a better goal difference! We had made it to the semi finals.

We discovered we were playing Trafford in the semi finals who had been an outstanding team throughout the day. The girls were feeling quite nervous and a couple of team changes has to be made due to an injury. The girls put up a fantastic fight with a scorching top corner goal from Mollie Barton which put us on 1-1. The girls continued to play some of the best football I had seen from them and made another attack at the last second, however, the whistle was blown just as our second goal was going in and the goal did not count. The match then went to penalties. After choosing 5 players our girls very bravely stepped up with confidence and managed to secure a draw on penalties after 5. Unfortunately the girls we heartbroken when we missed our 6th penalty and Trafford scored!

We then had a match to play for 3rd and 4th place! The girls managed to put their disappointment aside to play Wigan and after 20 minutes of battling we ended with another penalty shoot out! The girls very bravely stepped up to take their penalties and hearts were racing. We saw some spectacular saves from Daisy Harrison-Taylor and the girls could hardly believe their eyes to see her amazing reaction time at this crucial time. Captain Darcie Tennant stepped up to take the final penalty and scored a goal in the bottom left hand corner! The girls had secured 3rd place at the Manchester School Games and were awarded the bronze medals!

All the girls played amazing all day with some great defensive play from Fola Fasehun, Ebony Langley, Alana Pennington and Hannah Tipping. Captain Darcie Tennant helped to control mid-field alongside Laila Phillips, Mollie Barton and Anastacia Bennett. Megan Chambers and Keira Howard played fantastically upfront and our keeper Daisy Harrison-Taylor really helped to keep us in the games with some fantastic saves across the day.

Please congratulate the girls on this amazing success if you see them in school. The school is unbelievably proud of them all!
